Classroom Enhancement Grants Program

Deadlines | Goals | Eligible School Districts | Guidelines | Application | Approvals

The Rural Oklahoma Community Foundation strives to improve the quality of education in selected rural Oklahoma communities through its Classroom Enhancement Grants Program. The Classroom Enhancement Grant Program is designed to expand the teaching environment with additional activities and resources. The grants can be used for resources, projects and activities that are integrated with the academic curriculum and provide students with significant opportunities to expand their knowledge or understanding in a specific area of study. For more information, contact Nancy Anthony or Mary Surbeck at 405/235-5603.

Deadlines
Application Deadline
2008-09 School Year:
TBD

Goals
This program is to enhance the classroom learning environment and experience by providing resources, projects and activities integrated into the school curriculum and not normally provided by the school. The intention is to support a broad range and number of projects and to encourage proposals in a number of academic areas and at all grade levels.

Communities
Eligible School Districts:

  • Atoka County: Atoka elementary schools, Caney, Farris, Harmony, Lane and Tushka.
  • Bryan County: Bennington, Caddo, Rock Creek, Robert E. Lee Elementary School – Durant, Durant Middle School, Northwest Heights Elementary School – Durant, Washington Irving Elementary School – Durant and Intermediate Elementary School - Durant
  • Caddo County: Boone-Apache, Carnegie and Corn Bible School
  • Coal County: Coalgate, Cottonwood, Olney, and Tupelo
  • Jackson County:  Rivers Elementary School-Altus, Roosevelt Elementary School-Altus, Washington Elementary School-Altus, Sunset Elementary School-Altus, Will Rogers Elementary School-Altus and Altus Middle School
  • Johnston County: Coleman
  • Kiowa County: Mountain View-Gotebo
  • Latimer County: Buffalo Valley
  • Pushmataha County: Albion, Clayton, Nashoba, and Tuskahoma
  • Washita County: Washita Heights

Guidelines and Criteria
The grants are to be used for resources, projects, and activities that are integrated with the academic curriculum and provide students with a significant opportunity to expand their knowledge or understanding in a specific area of study. There is no maximum or minimum grant restriction but it is the intention of the Trustees to support a broad range and number of projects and to encourage proposals in a number of academic areas and at all grade levels.

  • All projects must be curriculum based and integrated into the basic material and course outline for the year.
  • Primary focus of the effort will be classroom academic and arts activities.
  • Grant funds may be expended in the following ways:
    1. Materials, supplies, and resources for classroom projects
    2. Field trips directly related to classroom activities (excluding transportation, supervision, and school liability expense). Field trips should include all students in an area of study and should not be limited to a selected group of students.
    3. In-class resources to enhance the overall quality of a subject area.

  • Funds should not displace other support which might be available from school system or other sources. For example, funding requests for basic supplies will be given a lower priority.
  • For activities involving grades 1 through 5, all children in a grade level should be given the opportunity to participate or benefit. For example, a funding request for books, science materials or supplies for one (of four) second grade homerooms does not consider all children in a grade level. Teachers for grades 1 through 5 should collaborate so that all children in a grade level will benefit.
  • Collaborations and cooperative projects, especially across disciplines are particularly encouraged.
  • Teachers should define specific goals and prepare a plan for evaluation that will allow the impact of the grant program to be assessed. The evaluation should include the number of students that will benefit from the project.
  • Grants will be administered through the respective public school administrative funds and should be used for items and activities that are consistent with applicable purchase policies.
  • The Principal will be asked to co-sign the application form for each grant indicating a review and approval of the project on the part of the school administration.
  • Funding for videos will generally be excluded.
  • Funding for audio books in grade levels above first grade will be given a lower priority unless the application demonstrates that the audio books are necessary to assist with learning disabled students.
  • Collaborations of this grant program and other grant programs, such as the State Arts Council's Artist-in-Residence program are encouraged.
  • Funding for the following items listed below will generally be excluded:
    1. Videos or DVDs
    2. Furniture type supplies and items, such as organizers for materials, chairs and bookshelves
    3. Computer hardware, including computer monitors, printers, CPUs, computer scanners and internet equipment
    4. Items or programs for athletic, extracurricular or social service activities
    5. Transportation expenses
    6. Multi-media equipment such as projectors, digital cameras and video equipment
    7. Applications for grades Pre-K and younger

Application
To apply for a grant, develop a project that fits the guidelines including a strong statement of curriculum. Develop a budget and time line. Review the project with the principal and others to be involved. Collaborate with other teachers and coordinate with other activities and with other proposed grant projects. Investigate all resources available. Complete the application form including all attachments. Submit four (4) copies of the completed application to the Rural Oklahoma Community Foundation by the deadline.
