Florida M. Knight

A working woman ahead of her time, Florida M. Knight took over management of the family business in 1924.  Having a special interest in children, Mrs. Knight left a building in trust with instructions that the income from the property is used to benefit disabled children.

Mrs. Knight could not have envisioned the series of events that would unfold decades later.  A victim of time, the building was ultimately demolished.  One of her sons, seeking to ensure that his mother's charitable interest s would endure, turned to the Oklahoma City Community Foundation in the mid-1970s for oversight of trust distributions.

Even though no trace remains of the structure today, and the Knight family has long since left Oklahoma City, the Oklahoma City Community Foundation continues to make special grants that perpetuate Mrs. Knight's desire to help disabled children "find happiness in life in spite of their handicaps."
