| Description |
Alliance Française d’Oklahoma was founded by Eleanor Kirkpatrick and four other Francophiles in 1946 “to teach the speaking, reading and writing of the French language, the appreciation of French culture, art, music, drama, dance and cinema, and to advance and encourage friendship and mutual respect between the people of France and America.” In 1963, l’Alliance was formally incorporated as a non-profit in the state of Oklahoma, with Mrs. John Kirkpatrick the first signature of the three incorporators. Of the many good works that bear her name in Oklahoma City, few are as representative of her as an individual than the Alliance. In March of 2007, the State of Oklahoma signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the education system of the Picardie region of France, the Académie d’Amiens. This has created opportunities for schools and teachers, but the mandate of our educational system is such that individual students may not have exchanges financed by State funds. Accordingly, l’Alliance Française d’Oklahoma has established as the first activity of the L’Alliance Française d’Oklahoma Eleanor Kirkpatrick Fund, the creation of a program to underwrite the expenses for one or more Oklahoma students to travel to Picardie each year. |
